Such an unique mix but at the same time such a well matched one! Living in Eastern Europe the attraction or at least mild interest in Turkish culture and folklore is a constant. Hearing this music as it should be sung and not bastardized by various "turbo folk" bands is refreshing. The mix with funk and prog rock comes as natural as well and makes this EP one of my favourite finds on Bandcamap
Favorite track: Oy Oy Emine.
A groovy and trippy double-sided 7-inch by Outernational pop-group Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek!
After the melancholic, heart-melting Nem Kaldı, the quintet delivers a light upbeat piece, Oy Oy Emine, a traditional Turkish song interpreted in the spirit of the group: the Bağlama (Turkish lute) introduces the melody before a warm and dynamic rhythm section kicks in, over which Derya's superb voice jousts with wah-wah guitars and acid synthesizers.
Oy Oy Emine is a seduction song anyone in Turkey can sing along to, about a man's mad love for a beautiful woman called Emine. Although many versions have been recorded, not many pop/rock groups have attempted to interpret it (one exception being Elektro Dschungel in the late 80's) and Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek offer a fresh, subtle arrangement that suits their 70's psychedelic sound.
Talking psychedelia, Kürk on side B brings us deeper in the band's search for slow, groovy floor-movers with stretched basslines and trippy melodies. The East-West connection Turkish bands had with Western psych-rock back in the day is just as real today with Grup Şimşek's various influences, its musicians originating from Turkey, England, France, Italy and Germany.
With Kürk's folky theme and hairy groove, DeryaYıldırım & Grup Şimşek prove once again that they are capable of writing original material that gives even more spirit and authenticity to their music.
The band is currently working on a full-length album, due in May 2019. This 2-track single will keep your home stereo or your DJ deck busy in the meantime, and will surely reveal a little of what Derya Yıldırım and her folks are up to!
