Young singer/multi-instrumentist Derya Yıldırım teams up with fantastic drummer Greta Eacott (G-Bop Orchestra / One-Take records) and 3 quarters of Catapulte Records' Orchestre du Montplaisant (Antonin Voyant, Graham Mushnik, Andrea Piro).
With members originating from Turkey, Germany, France, Italy and Great Britain, Grup Şimşek (pronounce « Shimshek ») encapsulates the Outernational generation.
Their debut EP kicks off with legendary Aşık Mahzuni Serif's Nem Kaldı, a groovy lament with killer melodyline, where saz and synth wave through a stream of wah-wah guitar arpeggios.
Graham Mushnik-penned instrumental 3,2,2,3 is a 5/4 psychedelic mover lead by the acid sounds of the organ – a subtle tribute to the architects of Anatolian Rock Moğollar ?
On side B, Derya delivers a splendid interpretation of Özdemir Erdoğan's song Gurbet.
Gurbet is a Turkish word describing a particular form of homesickness: watching from afar as things turn bad in your homeland.
Davet, a Grup Şimşek composition, is a dancey, Saz-lead song likely to shake many dancefloors with emotion. The lyrics are drawn from a poem by Nazım Hikmet, father of modern Turkish poetry.
Unlike in Western Pop culture, Turkish Pop music rather lives from traditionalised songs and endless ways of reimagining these. Grup Şimşek take the righteous and rich Turkish poetry to the future whilst not losing awareness of the past.
Grup Şimşek have already hit the stage in Germany, UK, France, Italy and Switzerland (F.K.A. Intercommunal Orchestra) and are planning some more... Anatolian invasion on its way !

La révélation Psych-Pop anatolienne ! 4 bijoux au son chaud et envoûtant, où se mèlent folklore turc, groove, danse et frissons électriques !
Derya Yıldırım, jeune chanteuse et multi-instrumentiste de talent, fait équipe avec Greta Eacott, fantastique batteuse londonienne (G-Bop Orchestra, One Take Records), et trois quarts de l'Orchestre du Montplaisant (Antonin Voyant, Graham Mushnik, Andrea Piro), de l'écurie Catapulte Records.
Originaires de Turquie, Allemagne, France, Grande-Bretagne et Italie, les membres du Grup Şimşek (prononcez « Chimchek ») s'inscrivent dans la génération sans frontières que certains qualifieront d'”Outernational”.
Résultat : le quintet sort son tout premier EP, Nem Kaldı. La chanson-titre, écrite par le légendaire Aşık Mahzuni Serif, est une complainte au groove lancinant, où le saz et les claviers ondulent au gré d'un flot de guitares wah-wah.
L'instrumental 3,2,2,3, signé Graham Mushnik, est un trip psychédélique en 5 temps, mené par les sons corrosifs de l'orgue. Un hommage discret au groupe Moğollar, pionnier du rock anatolien ?
La face B s'ouvre avec une splendide interprétation de Gurbet, chanson emblématique du grand Özdemir Erdoğan. Le mot Gurbet désigne une forme particulière de mal du pays: la sensation impuissante de voir les choses tourner mal dans sa contrée natale.
Davet, composé par le Grup Şimşek, est un épique dancefloor-killer mené par le saz. Les paroles sont tirées d'un poème de Nazım Hikmet, fondateur de la poésie turque moderne.
La musique Pop en Turquie, à la différence de la Pop occidentale, se nourrit de répertoires “traditionnalisés” et en réinvente sans cesse de nouvelles interprétations. Grup Şimşek propulse la richesse poétique de cette culture vers le futur, tout en gardant en tête l'héritage des artistes du passé.
Grup Şimşek s'est produit sur scène à Londres, en Allemagne, en Suisse, en Italie et en France et complote d'imminentes tournées... gare à l'invasion anatolienne !
